Did Gabrielle kill the samurai in FIN2? |

Gabrielle's first chakram throw went to that annoying samurai who deluded himself by thinking he actually beat Xena. What a loser. Anyway, we see Gabrielle bean him good with it, but it wasnt shown if he dided or not. I hope he did, it would serve him right. <g> So, do you think Gabrielle killed him or just gave him a major headache? |

Well, there isn't any blood on the chakram when Gabrielle catches it, but blood isn't necessarily an indicator of a fatal wound on XWP. The samurai wanted the "dignity of a warrior", which I will interpret as dying honorably in battle. Since Gabrielle doesn't think he treated Xena with dignity I think she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of killing him; she probably just used the chakram's stun feature and knocked him out.

Good question. I believe that Gabrille did kill him-because she hit him really hard with the chakram right in the head- which would most undoubtly kill him- as Xena did kill the person when she threw it at someone's head. Although MurderingHarpie does have a point that he wanted a honorable death, since Xena didn't get one so shouln't he- but I think that she killed him anyways to get the death he wanted the least- the most un-honorable.

That's right, Polaros. I can recall that when Xena threw her chakram at the heads of those farmers as they charged toward her with pitchforks in The Gauntlet, the chakram did kill them. But I only reached that conclusion by the incredible amount of blood the chakram was stained with when she caught it. As I said before, blood doesn't always imply a fatal wound on XWP, but it's usually used for dramatic effect. I think that if TPTB wanted us to believe Gabrielle killed the samurai they would have shown blood (just to shock us), but if I'm correct and Gabrielle didn't have a good reason to give the samurai what he wanted (an honorable death) I think I'm save by concluding that the chakram strike didn't kill him.

Yes, I think she did kill him.
She had beat him in the duel prior to that and spared his life. As a samurai, he was supposed to do the honorable thing and let her go, which he did because he had been disgraced by her. He originally told her to chop off his head so that he would regain his honor. But when she let him go, he took that opportunity to come after her again. And I think, considering what he had done to Xena, Gabrielle was willing to kill him for it even though she did show him an act of mercy the first time they faced off (during the duel). So, yeah, I think she killed him and I think it was right that she did. I don't think that blood on the chakram has to be an indication that she didn't kill him, because there have been many times when Xena has used her chakram to kill someone but it doesn't come up with any blood on the blade. |

I like to believe she didnt kill him. I dont like her killing things (and xena doesnt either) and to me it didnt look like she killed him. (But then again I didnt think Xena killed Ming Tien either.)
However, didnt RT of maybe RJS say she did kill him? So I guess she did then. I pretend she didnt though. This is what bothers me about the transition from season 4 to season 5 Gabrielle too. She abandons all her principles in IOM and then shes all warrior babe but no angst or soul searching till legacy. And Gabrielles blood innocence and principles are very important to Xena so its just weird, like the dahak thing all over again. I would have really liked some deeper insights on Gabrielles peacenik stage, she was a little irritating at times during that but I like that she gave nonviolence a shot. The internal conflict could have been portrayed better though. We do get this with Xena but not with Gabrielle. Xena learned she had to follow the way of the warrior but Gabrielles destiny remains a little unclear. We neeeeeed a movie! Some people say Gabrielle grew much more than Xena and the show is really about her but there are so many loose ends in her story that I have to disagree with that. |

In order for me to have some slight closure with that episode is for me to believe that Gabrielle killed him. I would be so upset to know that she let Xena's killer live.
As far as blood, well, considering when Gabrielle went homicidal on the Roman guards in Ides of March and only once was it shown there was actually blood being drawn, it really doesn't necessarily have to have blood in order to mean she killed him. Maybe they felt that if putting blood on the chakram in that moment (the first time she catches it) it would make the shock of the moment more morbid by showing that Gabrielle would kill on an instant possibly? I don't know, but I don't mind there isn't blood on there. As far as dieing with honor, well, he definately didn't. I think what he wanted was for her to chop off his head, and he would have had honor. She sliced his head open, no honor. Which I'm very glad it happened that way. |

I'm pretty sure that chakram to the head + last villain standing = dead villain, especially if the act is meant to show that Gabrielle has indeed become Xena's successor.

The fact that he makes no further appearance, while Xena and Gabrielle are waiting out the sunset, implies he is dead (although of course he could just be in long-term unconsciousness).
Frankly, I hope he is dead. Had he not interfered on the mountain when he did, Gab could have dumped the ashes in just after Yodoshi was beaten, and before Xena could come to Gab. So, Xena would live, and Gab and Xena find out about the souls [by resuscitating Ghost Killer and Kenji(?)]. Oh well, that wasn't in the script. Btw, I don't quite agree with the evaluation of Gab in season 5. She has a lot of reason to fight in that season, and I think she did it overall well. |

If it were enough to knock him out, that's what Gab would do. And I like the idea of her not giving him the satisfaction he desired for Xena's sake. That would be soooo Gabrielle. More importantly, IMO, from a cinematic standpoint, this scene is not really about that confrontation. This scene is about a major defining point in Gabrielle's life. A rite of passage. I'm not a big fan of AFIN, but this scene was superb. Tapert calculated perfectly the mood, the music, the background of the setting sun, for Gabrielle to receive the chakram as if she were a queen being annointed to take the throne. I should have seen it coming and, because I didn't, it was a spectacular moment in an otherwise frustrating episode. I've called the chakram the third star of the show. I'm glad the chak had its moment. I like [and I know this is my imagination] that the chak 'chose' to stay with Gabrielle, another sort of annointing. |

I would just like to point out that, unless it was meant to provide dramatic emphasis to a particular act of violence (e.g. when Xena pensively contemplates her sword after killing the boy in Remember Nothing, or when she holds the chakram after the Gabchak) it was very rare for the production people to smear "blood" over Xena's sword or the chakram, even when they had been obviously employed with deadly effect in fights, as may be observed in OAAA.

Not really sure.
On the one hand, I could see Gabrielle simply using the chakram to knock KiwiSam unconscious because: (a) she didn't kill unless necessary; and (b) she wouldn't want to give KiwiSam the honourable death he craved. BUT on the other hand, Gabrielle was short of time and KiwiSam had already interfered enough with Gabrielle getting to the fountain in time. She couldn't afford for him to interupt her again and it was also her first throw with the chakram (so, even if she intended only to knock him out, she may have killed him). I'm inclined to go with Gabrielle killing KiwiSam so he wouldn't get in her way again. Also, it wouldn't be the completely "honourable" death that he wanted because he wasn't beheaded and he wasn't really killed during a duel, he was just killed from the distance (eg. not during the heat of battle). As for blood. I don't think TPTB wanted to "ruin" the moment by showing Gabrielle with a bloody chakram so to speak. Plus, it also leaves it ambiguous, which is something TPTB seemed keen to do with other aspects of the show. Kind of like a "choose your own adventure" novel. Cheers, Haeph. |

Interesting answers here. While it would seem to make sense for Gabrielle to kill Xena's murderer, it makes more sense, to me, that Gabrielle would deny that him that warriors death he wants so bad. Hmm. |
