I'm not sure a convention would need any kind of licensing approval from NBC Universal

You could get the actors and writers and so forth together, but it would be pretty much impossible to promote it without using any Universal IP. And you wouldn't be able to show episode clips during panels or anything like that.
I appreciate that, but theoretically it would be possible. An "Action Heroine" convention with Lucy Lawless from Xena: Warrior Princess, Battlestar Galactica, Spartacus and Ash vs. Evil Dead would presumably be acceptable. A "Warrior Princess" convention is probably borderline, especially as that term has arguably developed a somewhat "generic" meaning to refer to almost any female warrior and is no longer primarily associated with Xena. Depending upon the size of the convention, it would probably be enough for NBC Universal to send a threatening letter about a potential breach of their proprietary rights in the "Xena: Warrior Princess" brand.
Lucy Lawless has attended quite a few "generic" science-fiction and pop culture exhibitions and I'm not sure they obtain licences from NBC Universal simply to announce that Lucy Lawless will be attending, even if they use photos of Lucy as Xena for marketing and promotional purposes. Then again, maybe they do obtain the requisite licences from all the various entertainment companies for all of their guests. That would certainly be a momentous task for smaller conventions where they're promoting guests who have appeared in numerous productions.
Anyway, its all a little off-topic.
