Flipping heck, I'm not surprised he decided to go after all that. I think Jack's going off to find the Doctor. That would be cool if he turned up in the new series. It was said in the early days that Torchwood operatives have short lifespans, but blimey, there's only Gwen left out of the 5 members now. I wonder if they get hazard pay? ...

Maybe it's because he is moving to the US? I liked the first half of Children of Earth but felt the ending was very weak (not to mention full of plot holes). And why was it necessary to make Captain Jack so despicable? IMO the writers of both Xena and Babylon 5 could teach RTD a thing or two about sacrifice: the admirable kind is where your character sacrifices _himself_ not some other, unwilling poor s*d. -- Barbara

I actually hadn't seen the previous two series (can't wait to get hold of them now though!), although I had read that a lot of the main characters died. But still, I wasn't expecting it. To be honest, I didn't mind that Jack sacrificed his grandson. He didn't really have much of a choice. He made the same decision that the politicians made - sacrifice the smaller number for the good of the majority - but he was prepared to do what no one else was and be the one to make a sacrifice that affected him personally. And he wasn't trying to appear the good guy by deceiving everyone else. And plus... I didn't really care about the kid. I cared about Ianto. And now I want him to be brought back in another series.

Spoiler [+] I felt opposite to Barbara as i felt the first couple episodes were weaker and the ending strong. I love the episodic formula and whilst it was good to get to know other characters (Ianto's sister, Jack's daughter) I missed the boom-boom impact of the first couple series. It also became a lot more mainstream, certainly not so much of the sex and violence of s1 in particular. It was always going to be hard to please hard core TW fans after all 2/5ths of the original cast were gone. That said the last couple episodes were heart wrenching-I guessed someone would die and had a bad feeling for Ianto; jack's choice was heartbreaking as was Frobisher and several characters (Bridget-Frobisher's secretary, the army woman (Johnson???)) showed what they made of-in a good way. I do wonder if this was it for TW especially as Jack mentioned all the departed team (even the troblesome Suzy) and his angelic staus has slipped a tad.
