Lost Mariner Posts: 868 (10/13/08 09:57 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None And as you can see ... as of yesterday ... our nasty time of the year has started. This latest round of fires burned 10,00 acres, closed down 118 freeway, killed 2 people and caused the evacuation of more than 1,200 people according to the 5:00PM news. We just had a news break that said there is also a 100-acre fire in the hillsides in a neighborhood near Bonita Canyon Drive off the 73 toll road which is down by Newport beach, Homeowners last night coming out of Marek canyon. There now nine separate fires burning somewhere in the Los Angeles/Ventura/San Bernardino/Riverside/Orange County areas. Renee' and her children are safe in Manhattan Beach, except for the smoke that has started to fill the basin. So far, I am also safely away from any of these fires. Like earthquakes, it seems these fires just come with the territory of living in that particular area. Much like folks who choose to live in Florida and the Gulf coast know hurricanes come with the territory; or folks who live in the plains states know destructive tornados come with the territory. I hope things work out for the best, but whenever you have a battle of man against nature.......man is always gonna lose. Personally, I would never choose to live in an area that had to deal with these kinds of issues year after year; but obviously many folks do. Both Renee and Lucy choose to live in California, as do millions of others. Fortunatley for them however, if things got too bad in their immediate vicinity, they have options available to them to get out; other homes and places they can locate to till the danger had passed. Your 'average Joe' doesn't always have that option. Hope everyone stays safe and smart. If you're in a danger zone.....get out. Homes 'can' be replaced; your lives can't. I live in a bush fire area, and I have to say that it isn't always by 'choice' that people live here. People live where the work is, or where they can find housing, or even where there are required facilities. Choice is a relative statement. Very relative, and just because people live in these areas doesn't mean you can fob it off so easily just because it happens every year - it screams of callousness, which I am sure your not. Plus, on the completely aesthetic side, busfires despite the destruction is very very pretty. Very pretty. Of course, the smoke that rolls in, not so much. I hope people are able to stay safe, and that they pay attention to the evacuations.

I do hope everybody stays as safe as possible. And well said, Deev. I guess you could say I choose to live in a portion of Tornado Alley, but that's because my family is here, my dearest friends are here, and my job is here. And honestly, I can't think of anyplace else that I'd choose to live that is within my budget, of course. The places I'd like to live are well beyond my financial means. And that's not to say these locations are free from the wrath of mother nature or man-made disasters. I survived one tornado, and another near miss. I just hope that if a tornado ever does strike me down for good, nobody will say that I had it coming to me because I chose to live here. While a cigarette could be the culprit, the fact remains you have raging wildfires and that is what folks are battling now, not the guy who dropped the cigarette or mishandled a campfire. And sorry, but just because I mentioned that it seems to happen every year doesn't mean I feel callous about it. I think it's awful, just like the Hurricanes we see over here on the East Coast destroying homes and families is awful. And believe me, I know it's not easy for anyone to relocate and I don't think I actually said anyone should.....I just said that personally, for me, I wouldn't choose to live there; and if I did live there, I would get out.....just like if I lived in Florida or New Orleans, I would relocate. But that's just me. But folks who do live in these areas understand what comes with the territory of living there. Anyone living in California knows the 'big one' could hit at anytime....just like thrill knows the big tornado could hit any given year. I'm not saying any one of you should leave or relocate, I was just saying what i would do. Like i said, i just hope folks are smart and get out if they are in danger. And, people should be fighting the fools who are callous, and those who deliberately light the fires. The more they are caught and adaquently prosecuted, hopefully the less likely this insanity will be. I get what youa re saying Tony, I was just pointing out that wildfires (or bushfires) are not always natural. No where is safe from nature... to think so is an arrogance that is beyond my comprehension. Earthquake, Tornado's, Hurricanes, Cyclones, Tsunami's, storms, floods, fires... All possible no matter where you live. There is no place that can be deemed 'safe'. I do understand your desire not to live in these area's though, and I am glad you have the means and capabilities to do so. BTW Tony, I didn't say you felt callous, actually I said I am sure you're not - but your flippant "Well it's to be expected" screams "it's your fault because you haven't moved" does sound callous. I don't believe i ever said that.....but someplaces are safer than others. Where I live we've never had earthquakes, only a handful of small tornado's, just the outskirts of hurricane's after they've hit land and diminished in power, and never had a problem with wildfires. No, we're not 'safe' from nature; but I can say I feel 'safer' here than I would in other places where those kinds of natural disasters are much more prominent. Saying California is much more dangerous than Virginia in terms of earthquakes is not arrogance, it's simply a fact. As for my other comments, I think you just misconstrued what i meant. That's probably my fault, things I type up don't always come out sounding the way I mean them to be. Given that, I'll just bail out now since if i try and explain myself any further it'll probably just sound worse. Tony

Tony Investigators now think at least one of the fires was arson, meaning the death of a woman who was killed in a head-on collision on a freeway blanketed in smoke ... is now a case of manslaughter. However, my immediate concern is for our army of firefighters ... both on the ground and in the sky, who are out there tonight on the front lines. Even the finest LA County crews are no match for the powerful Santa Ana winds blowing in from the northeast high desert. These Santa Ana winds are sometimes compared to a blow-torch, and when they power flames through a neighborhood at speeds of 75 miles per hour, you can see why. They leave nothing but a scorched earth behind. Regardless of whether you think the 17.6 million people who live in our five-county region are wise or just plain stupid for living here ... say a little prayer for those brave men and women who can't turn back tonight ... our firefighters. I'm lucky that I'm located where the worst thing that can happen is a really small tornado that only can move a few old dead trees. Worst storm we had here was a few years ago though. A lot of forest owners killed them selfs because their forest was ruined. We have fires here too but not as large. Worst was 2005 when the temperature hit 50 degrees Celsius and before that we had a mild winter with little snow and during spring we barely had any rain. Lost Mariner Posts: 873 (10/14/08 11:26 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The Santa Ana winds that blow in from the high desert are forecast to continue through tomorrow, however, for now they have slacked off. The fires in the valley north of me are 70 percent contained and most of the 1,800 residents forced to flee their homes on Sunday and Monday are now being allowed to return. I am so very proud of our firefighters, because it was their commitment and hard work last night that brought these fires under control. At one time, they though the fires could sweep all the way across the San Fernando Valley until they reached the Pacific Ocean. For now ... all appears to be under control ... even though some have lost everything they have. And this is just the first of our fire season. Anyway, thanks for your prayers! I've always felt lucky to have been born and raised in an area of the country that is relatively safer from extreme weather and natural occurances. At most we've only had slight tremors, don't usually get tornados although there have been some small ones now & then and we don't usually feel the full force of hurricanes. There are areas near me that can and do experience flooding when there are big rainstorms but I've never lived in one of those areas. If my home is flooded, the world is in big trouble because that would mean the water reached the 12th floor. I'll take the snow and ice storms in winter and the heat & humidity in the summer over earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes and wildfires any day. But seriously, I don't know what I would do if I was born and raised in an area that always got flooded like in New Orleans or other places like parts of SC. If my home was washed away or destroyed by a different force of nature, I don't think I'd rebuild there again and again. If I was able to, I'd move out of the area so I wouldn't have to go through that again. When I was in San Francisco, I loved the weather and I loved the city. However, it was a bit scary to me when I saw that the hotel directory had a section on what to do if there was an earthquake. I don't know if I could live in an earthquake zone. I suppose you get used to living with that possibility when you have to. About a month after I was in San Fran, they had a big earthquake.
