Slightly off topic (well alright very off topic!). I'm not a big fan of talk shows and we have them in Uk more as a weekly thing like Jonathon Ross. Are they really that big in America? And if so, what is the attraction of them, as they seem to be self promotion adverts to me?

The Tonight show is an iconic program that has been on the air for over 30 years. The most well known host was Johnny Carson. He would do a comedy monologue then introduce guests. Some of the guests would come in and talk about their latest project including A list actors and singers would sing their newest songs. It was also a launching pad for comedians to begin their career and other skits are done as part of the nightly routine. When Johnny left his successor was Jay Leno and it has continued to be the top rated show for the past 8 or so years he has been on. It follows the nightly news and for late night is considered the primetime hour. Conan's show followed the Tonight show making him second banana so to speak. Someone made the decision that he was better than Leno so as part of Conan's contract to keep him at the network, they promised to let him take over the Tonight show. I personally do not find Conan funny. The shows are popular for folks who stay up late and I'm a bit of a nightowl but people like you and me tune in when we hear Lucy is going to be on the show and that is the popularity. Now that Leno's contract is up he is free to accept another show on the network or go to another network. If he does this he could be in competition with the Tonight Show and while the Tonight Show is iconic, he filled rather large shoes and didn't seem to want to leave so why they are doing this I don't really know.

I always thought his sophomore humor was at a fitting time since it was the late late show. So I am kind of disappointed.

Apparently NBC thinks he is the better choice. I hope ABC picks him up and moves Jimmy Kimbel back and gives him that time slot and I hope he wipes the floor with him. I won't be watching the Tonight show anymore.

Gabsfan, our primetime viewing is considered 8pm - 11pm followed by 30 minutes of the nightly news. For those of us who stay up a bit longer, the 11:30pm time slot is considered The Primetime for late night television. Each of the three major channels have a similar show following the news. The Tonight show has always been the leader with David Letterman being second and I think Jimmy Kimmel is third. We still consider only abc, nbc and cbs to be the three major networks. The shows are one hour and each are followed by another one hour show that is allowed to be a bit racier because it's on later at night. One of my favorites is Craig Ferguson. I think that's his name. It is unheard of though to promote your second guy over your top guy and that's also why it's kind of a big story.

I like Jay Leno better than Conan. Conan is ok on his own show though.

That's the problem. Conan is now the host of the Tonight Show. Leno is gone.
