I think the fact that Ares buried Xena and Gabrielle together in Looking Death in the Eye showed that he recognized the depth of their devotion to each other, as well as Gabrielle's role in making Xena the woman he loved ("When you sacrificed yourself for others, you were hers."). Those two factors were also why he saved Gabrielle in Motherhood IMO. You could argue that that was what made his sacrifice the ultimate act of love, since he technically didn't need to save her at all. It seems to me that Gabrielle helped Xena to become someone that Ares wanted even more than who she was before. It turned from lust and a desire to control, to a love that never would have come about without the changes. Changes that Gabrielle helped Xena make. There's one moment I particularly love, in Amphipolis Under Siege where Gabrielle tells Ares that if Xena hooks up with him (for lack of a better word ), she's become a vicious killer again. Ares says "Yeah, well, I kinda liked that Xena." Gabrielle replies, "Really? Then why are you so obsessed with who she is now? Tell me you don't feel anything for the real Xena -- the good Xena." Ares looks at her very thoughtfully. I've always thought that was the first time Ares realized he was in love with the "good" Xena. So in that sense Gabrielle actually made him understand something about himself and his feelings.
