As a general principle of civilization, it is far better to have justice administered by regular tribunals than by vigilantes.

However, for myself I follow the precept of "salus populi suprema lex"--"the safety of the people is the supreme law"--and when I see the conspicuous absence of a protective force in Phoenicia, with slavers operating with impunity and the "authorities" apparently more concerned with stopping Najara than putting open criminal lords like Marat out of business (and not being concerned about Xena's own possible criminal acts against Najara's men), then I tend to believe Najara's contention that the authorities and courts in Phoenicia are corrupt and have little interest in protecting their people. Therefore, what I saw Najara do in The Crusader to be a matter of unfortuante necessity for the maintenance of even a barebones concept of justice and rule of law that was the right of the common people.

Finally, Xena (and TPTB) had a lot of nerve to accuse Najara of criminal vigilantism that needed to be punished, after the acts that Xena had committed against the guilty and innocent alike in Gabrielle's Hope, The Debt, The Bitter Suite, and When in Rome.
