Yup, but that was mainly because I saw Xena as a Tragic Hero - which made her death kind of imperative.

I didn't like the end when i first watched it, but I think xena choosing to die was consistant with the principles she had been living in her search for
redemption, and the fact that she had mentioned in episodes, like sacrifice, that somethings are worth dying for. When it comes down to it, xena could have
chosen to ride of into the sunset and do the happily-ever-after thing with gabrielle... i'm sure they would have been happy together, but i don't know
if at the end of her life that xena would have been completely happy with herself... the whole its not when you die, but how you die that matters.
Given the fact that xena and gabby were able to die and come back to life multiple times each, this kind of undermines death, knowing there is a way return... it almost felt like escaping death was almost just a convenient ambrosia away. The end of the series meant she had to face certain death with no possibility of returning. To allow herself to die permanently, to me, was very brave, and only because of the pure selflessness of this act i think she could have achieved redemption, and the only way she could forgive herself... to me this is a powerful ending. oops i appear to have gotten carried away! |

Hey Tinka and welcome to the board!
I actually viewed it much the same way too. I still didn't like that she died and that was for purely selfish reasons. It's not often we see strong and positive representations of a lesbian couple on tv (okay, like never!), and it really ticked me off that they weren't allowed to ride off into the sunset together (well, they did, but not the way I wanted!). I get the principle that Xena was fighting for and understand it. It doesn't mean I like it. However, I agree that with Xena anything is possible, and I still hold to the belief that there is a way should could be brought back from the dead. Maybe wishful thinking, but I'd like to believe they'll figure it out.

I don't consider this like "Killing the Hero because she is lesbian" this was not the point of the all show. Xena was killed because she wanted
so, she wanted to be redeemed, she wanted peace for her soul once and for all. She died as a Hero, and as R.J said it was a common thing in Greek tragedy to
kill the Heroes of the story.

I think Lucy said at the London Con that if they made a film now they would forget about FIN, because otherwise everyone would know how the story was going to
turn out. I felt a great sense of relief when she said that!

I really would like to see a movie!!!! Gabrielle brining xena to life!!! it would be a good movie!!!
BECAUSE GABBY ROCKS!!! hehehe!!! So, from my point of view, Xena is a little bit selfish (it's hard to say this because I adore her hehe) but when Gabrielle decided to do something or die, xena did all the possible to save her and when xena decides to die.. gabrielle has to respect that... GABRIELLE TROW THE ASHES AND DON'T LISTEN TO XENA!! COME ON GIRL, YOU CAN DO IT!!! hehehe Do you imagine that?? Xena: please gabrielle... there are soo soo many souls.... Gabrielle looks at Xena and throws the ashes Xena: NOOO WHAT ARE YOU DOING?? Gabrielle: now.. I have tasted your lips.. you are mine now!!!!! hahahahahahahaha |

Xena: please gabrielle... there are soo soo many souls....Very good script, Missdurance. Is this the point at which FIN would include the real kiss? |

I can see what TPTB were trying for. It was a logical direction - a Greek Tragedy. Unfortunately, the only the true tragedy I see in FIN was the story. The
"excuse" was out of the blue. And either Xena appeared to be tricked into staying dead or she gave up, tired of seeking peace for herself and
accepted staying dead with the first (highly suspect) promise from a brand new (highly suspect) character.
To me, the Xena character did not stay "in character." My Xena would not be duped. My Xena would not give up. The Xena in FIN was not MY Xena. Avid |

Of course, there were some good moments in FIN2
. However, I feel a sense of frustration at the wasted opportunity to do something
memorable (for all the right reasons).
I would have preferred the idea of not killing anyone (except redshirts) in the final episode. After all, Xena knew how to survive better than most. So why not have something surreal like the Bitter Suite with original music to finish on a high note and show how good the productions could be? |

Yeah, that was a real kiss, and Xena responded to Gabrielle. I saw that several times in Slow mo too

As a subtexter, I didn´t like the end of FIN - I would have preferred X and G to sail away together after having found a way to save all the 40 000 souls in
some clever way like they had spent the last few years saving a lot of other people.
But, even though i don´t like the ending I actually recently came to understand it better after watching Locked up and tied down in which Xena explains it all in the scene where she´s saying good-bye to G before being taken on the ship that´ll take her to the prison island. I can´t remember every word Xena says, but she basically explains that she just cannot forgive herself and that she´s ready to take any punishment they see fit. She also answers G´s questions that are very much like ours - watch it again, it´s very good. FIN does make sense when remembering the start of SOTP where Xena has decided to give it all up but that decision gets interrupted and delayed because of Gabrielle and during the course of the next few years Xena learns a lot but still doesn´t change that much - it´s Gabrielle who changes the most. Xena´s remorse is also what makes her human and easy for us to like and feel sorry for and to see ourselves in - if she didn´t feel that remorse we, or Gabrielle, probably wouldn´t love her so much. So, the way I see it - in order to avoid the ending of FIN with Xena dying, she would have had to fix the reason for her hatred and anger much sooner and then we wouldn´t have had any series at all, probably. Still, personally I would much rather have X & G ride off into the sunset together and have Xena lived the rest of her life helping others fighting for good by Gabriells´s side and live happily ever after. So, I don´t agree with FIN, but I do understand it. |

SWEXA, that is a very helpful explanation. I am just wondering, though, why Gabrielle did not dump the ashes as Missdurance suggests she should. After all, she
tried to stop Xena when she was letting herself be carried off to prison in Locked up and Tied Down. Gabrielle could see that Xena was just giving in to her
feelings of remorse and needing to be punished and did her best to get her out of prison. I would think she would have spotted a bout of "I deserve
this" affecting Xena's judgement in FIN2 and acted swiftly to bring Xena back to earth.

Well, Allegorie, I think the reason why Gabrielle didn´t dump the ashes is that she respected Xena´s wish because she loved her so much. I don´t agree with it,
but I think that´s why.
