I read Kelley Armstrong's latest book in her "Women of the Otherworld" series, "Personal Demon." I love the series and the main
character in this book is one of my favorites, so I really enjoyed it.
I'm now reading a clever novel: "Lost in Austen: Create Your Own Jane Austen Adventure". Remember the create your own adventure books of the 1980s? That's what this is. But you it's also a game. You gain and lose points in five categories (Accomplishments, Confidence, Connections, Intelligence, and Fortune) based on events and the choices you make. It's quite fun. ![]() WoW Gal#1 "The first hundred years are the hardest." |

I read a book called "Child 44" by Tom Rob Smith.
It plays in the Soviet Union in 1953 during Stalins time. A dead child is found murdered on the railroad tracks. But the government rules it as accident. Because communism is perfect the state says there is no murder because all people are happy. The main character is Leo Demidov, he is an agent who always believed in his country and thought that all the bad things he did, like kidnapping people and torture them until they admit that they are spies, were okay. He starts to question the states methods and is exiled with his wife to a small village. There he finds about other murders and starts to investigate. The local police already has a suspect, a young man who lives in an asylum for insane people. But Leo thinks he is innocent, and while trying to proof that he gets himself and his family in danger. Because people who work against the system are either send into the gulag or killed. I'm halfway through the book and I have to say it's the first time that I read something about the Soviet Union. But it won't be the last. I'm sure. I can't really say how accurate the author described the live during that time. If it's accurate then the paranoia must have been pretty high and killing your own citizen is never a good thing. ![]() |

I just finished Island of Lost Girls by Jennifer McMahon, about Rhonda, a young woman who witnesses the abduction of a little girl.It brings back
memories of her childhood best friend, who also went missing. Rhonda starts trying to solve the mystery.
I thought I had this figured out before I'd read 30 pages. I thought wrong. It's pretty good. A fast read.

I've recently read Plum Syke's debut and sophomore chic-lit novels, respectively titled "Bergdorf Blondes" and "The Debutant
Divorcee."
It's chick-lit, you know what you're getting into when you pick the book up. Neither novel is horrible, but neither is ground-breaking, either. ![]() WoW Gal#1 "The first hundred years are the hardest." |

AAACCCKKK!!!!! I go away for, okay, two years or so -- and when I get back, there is Paike, still reading away, reading reading reading, and sharing with us
about it!!!
I officially dub you, The Little Reader That Could, Paikey -- cheers!!!
I just read a hilarious and heartwarming book called 'Hit By A Farm: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Barn', by Catherine Friend -- it's about two women who buy a farm in Minnesota and raise sheep, chickens, grapevines, and other assorted critters, knowing NOTHING about farming before they started -- what a ride, and very endearingly told; funny too!

I just finished Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See. It's a story about two women in nineteenth
century China who support each other as they go through footbinding, arranged marriages, and other challenges together. I highly recommend it; it's very
sad, though. I cried at the end and I never cry when I read.

I FINALLY finished Dante Alighieri's 'The Divine Comedy' 13th century literature is tough work. And I can safely say I prob wont attempt that again
because towards the end I was reading about 10 pages a day..
Nooooooow, I'm starting Miguel De Cervantes' 'Don Quixote' .. I've only read the Prologue and i'm already kinda hooked. Though this book is just under 1000 pages long. So if I go MIA for a week, you'll know why.

Hey Shell, I'm reading Dante's Inferno right now ... and I have to admit after reading it for awhile, I've got to put it down and come back to it.
I'm enjoying reading it though.

Oooh, awesome. Someone to talk about it with. Lol. Inferno and Purgatorio are ok, because they're largely descriptive. Whereas Paradiso has entire
Cantologies of word vomit, spewed from St Peter or whoever, so it gets a bit more philosophical and confusing. Inferno was definately the most fun to read for
me, though.
I started reading Don Quixote at 1am this morning, i've already read 60 pages, so there's definately a contrast there.. Lol.

Awesome, that's the first line, is it not?
There are alot of good quotes in that book, but I didn't bother writing any down. Already written a few from Quixote though.

It's been a while since I've visited this nook of the internet.
I read Jacqueline Carey's "Kushiel's Mercy." This is the second trilogy that she's set in this alternative history version of France (called Terre d'Ange). The book is the last one in the trilogy. While it doesn't compare (IMO) to the first trilogy, of the second trilogy, it's one of the better books. Lots of adventure and mysticism and there's an emotional journey as well. But the same complaints I've had about the past two books still remain. I'm sure I've posted about the other books somewhere in this thread. ![]() WoW Gal#1 "The first hundred years are the hardest." |
