Did it do it for me? The first time I saw it, no. Now, absolutely!!! I was disappointed with the water transfer part, the too short scene, the shot from the back, Xena not totally conscious, knowing how it was going to end. Since that time, I have watched it so many times, in so many ways, analyzed it frame by frame, slo-mo, zoom, reverse slo-mo, Youtube clips, now I see it for what it was......truly a kiss. The water transfer......we saw a drop of water at the end of the scene. What I saw before that had nothing to do with water. Too short........slo-mo at X4 or 5 and it last longer. Xena not totally conscious.....true, but she not only responded, she participated in it. Think about it this way, with all the complaints, it could have been worse, we could have had nothing.

I recently read a transcript by a fan of the audio commentary from the stand alone dvd of the Director's Cut from 2002, Lucy, Renee and Rob. The gist of it. There was much tension on the set. Rob thought that Lucy and Renee were being obstinate, not doing what he wanted. The scene was not in the script. Lucy didn't understand that this was to be both a kiss and a water transfer. Acting out a water transfer, she thought there should be separation between them so you could see the water. So, that's how she was doing it. They finally got the message, ergo, we got a kiss and a water transfer. Lucy, I think, ask Rob if he got what he wanted. He answered, he got exactly what he wanted.

We know that Rob would not shoot the kiss that was in the script of WFC because he wanted to save it for the finale. My opinion only, but I think because he believed there was something to come after the finale, big screen, dvd, tv movie that he made this kiss ambiguous so the real deal could be done in a movie. If this ep had openly acknowledged they were lovers, had there been a straight forward kiss, then do you think if there had been a movie, it would have been....well....anti-climatic? Kind of like reading first time fan fiction. After you read the first really good one, after a while they become...well...anti-climatic. Alas, the best laid plans.

When the series was running, I got it on 2 stations on different days. I saw The Quest on Saturday afternoon. I became an absolute subber that day, but just to be sure I watched it again when it ran on the other station. Lucy told Rob he outed her character in FIN. If Rob had been around, I could have told him he outed her character in The Quest. I never had any doubts after that ep. Water transfer? Who cares! It was a kiss and a nice one at that.

EZ, are you saying you have never watched this in slo mo? If not, you don't know what you're missing.
Here is a vid that gives it the best treatment I have ever seen. Gives a whole new perspective. Be advised some of it has been done in reverse, so it is not what you see for real.

I remember the first vid I saw of the kiss. The entire segment was done in reverse. After the ep aired, someone did a Backward Kiss .mov file and it was posted at Whoosh. Whoosh took it down 1/02, but put it back up until 08/03. They removed their large files then in order to save space. I like the Youtube version better because she splices in the forward and backward so well that unless you've seen it a zillion times, you don't really know which is which.
