1. When did you start watching Xena?
First when I was six or seven, then started again two years ago. 2. Did you see the subtext right away, or did it become apparent to you over time? Right away! 3. Which moment or episode made you realize Xena and Gabrielle's relationship was more than a platonic friendship? When I started watching it again, I knew about the subtext so I was tainted already. The first time I squealed because it was obvious that there was "something there" was in The Titans and Xena's reaction to Gabrielle and the priest boy. 4. Which is your favorite subtext moment? What a silly question Nuttendale. ALL of them. 5. Where are you from? I come from the land-down under, the one with vegemite. 6. What would you like us to call you? Pal, Pali, Mouse. I answer to anything. The Way of Gabrielle | ROCer for life | PLA: Artist in residence ![]() |

Hello All:
Since I'm new around here, I figured I would jump in and answer this. 1. When did you start watching Xena? I started watching Xena from the very first episode. Then I told a few friends and we started watching it together. 2. Did you see the subtext right away, or did it become apparent to you over time? There were things I thought I saw from the beginning but I doubted what I was seeing. As time went on, it became apparent it was intentional and I had a valid reading of the show. 3. Which moment or episode made you realize Xena and Gabrielle's relationship was more than a platonic friendship? See #2 above. I always thought there was more going on. Through the first season, I thought they were both interested in one another but kept it to themselves (i.e didn't let the other know). My personal opinion is that it was in the Quest that they realized the feelings were mutual. That's the short, condensed version of my thoughts. I think there really was a lot going on with them internally throughout the series. 4. Which is your favorite subtext moment? I really like the poem scene from MHR, but there are many and I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. 5. Where are you from? I'm from central New York (i.e. not the city) 6. What would you like us to call you? You can call me Peaches. I've been lurking in these parts for awhile. Back in the day, when Xena was airing and people were debating the whole subtext reading, things could get heated on some boards and flame wars could get ugly. This board seems to be well behaved and I have seen diverse opinions expressed without any ensuing nastiness; so I decided to come out of the shadows. I look forward to participating and am just waiting for those weekly subtext episode discussions. :-) Peaches. |

M'dear Mousy, thank you for posting!
ETA: And Peaches! I'm glad you've come out of lurkdom to join in our discussions. If I can ramble on a bit, I think my Xenaverse acceptance of others' opinions has extended to my outlook on things outside the Xenaverse too. If the Xenaverse helped me in just one way, I think that would be it. |

First of all: welcome to Subtext Central, Peaches!
- Even though I'm not a newbie in SC, I think it would be fun to have profiles for the posters, so... 1. When did you start watching Xena? - October 2004. A German satellite channel started a complete rerun of both Herc and Xena from episode 1 onwards, so I decided to check them out. I missed Sins Of The Past, so Chariots Of War was my first episode. 2. Did you see the subtext right away, or did it become apparent to you over time? - I didn't see it right away; it gradually dawned on me that there was something between them. 3. Which moment or episode made you realize Xena and Gabrielle's relationship was more than a platonic friendship? - There wasn't a defining moment as such, but rather a combination of the double entendres in Altared States, the expression of shock on Gabrielle's face as she walks up to Xena's body in The Greater Good (and the tree-whacking incident right afterwards), and Xena's breakdown in Is There A Doctor In The House. After that I couldn't believe I missed it earlier. 4. Which is your favorite subtext moment? - I'm a big sucker for wordless scenes, so the two balcony scenes in When Fates Collide are very high on my list. On the more physical side, all of A Day In The Life, minus the stuff where Xena chases the Giant. 5. Where are you from? - Copenhagen, Denmark. 6. What would you like us to call you? - Michael's my name, so that's fine. Michael |

1. When did you start watching Xena?
In summer 2004 2. Did you see the subtext right away, or did it become apparent to you over time? I saw it in Adventure In The Sintrades part 1 and I wanted to know more about this. I read an essay in Italian Called: Xena and Gabrielle: true Love; written by Antonio Scaglioni. He was analysing the subtext in each episode, and I started to be subtexter 3. Which moment or episode made you realize Xena and Gabrielle's relationship was more than a platonic friendship? In Adventure in The Sintrade ( I did not see all the seasons, just few season 2 episodes, all season 4 and six when I started watching it) I saw Xena mourning Gabrielle and wanting to see her for the last time. She was risking her own life just to see her once again, and I thought: this is love. 4. Which is your favorite subtext moment? When Gabrielle touches Xena's hair whiole she is sleeping in OAAA 5. Where are you from? Italy 6. What would you like us to call you? Subtexter is fine |

1. When did you start watching Xena?
I was about 10 or so. Return of Calisto hooked me. 2. Did you see the subtext right away, or did it become apparent to you over time? No, I didnt. Everyone I knew kept telling me there was more, and I just didnt get it. Then I saw Ides Of March - and got whacked with the Obvious Stick. 3. Which moment or episode made you realize Xena and Gabrielle's relationship was more than a platonic friendship? Seeing Gab freak out when she thought Xena was dead in The Greater Good. 4. Which is your favorite subtext moment? In Devi. When Xena brings back the Holy Water, and Gabby gets all pissed then starts crying. Xena's all like "c'mon, please dont cry" and hugs her. Gets me every time. 5. Where are you from? Florida 6. What would you like us to call you? Brady works. ____________________________________

well I'm semi-newbie---
When did I start watching Xena??--from the get go--I was in my early 20's--I taped it weekly and only just got rid of over 20 VHS for the DVD set (I must say I lapsed a little during season 5 tho) Did I see subtext right away--or over time? I think right away--not to mention I was just 'coming out' around then--and my intense interest in the show in a way helped my coming out to my friends--since everyone I knew thought they WERE a couple... Which moment or episode made me realize they were more than platonic?---hmmm---from that first season--from a Gab point of view The Greater Good---when she walks outside thinking Xena is dead and totally loses it---and on a Xena point of view Is There A Doctor In The House--the whole 'don't you leave me...'---I know these aren't sultry stares moments but they're what comes to mind first for me My favorite sub moment---oooh this is a toughie---HOD dance is my 'physical' fav---and OAAA is my most emotional/verbal fav (...and I want to be like you...even in death Gabrielle I will never leave you...) I'm from upstate NY---and Heather or XenGabSoul--I geuss |

1. When did you start watching Xena?
Hmm. I think it was around the time of Is There A Doctor In The House. It's first airing. I had been resisting watching it, but decided to give it a chance after seeing that episode. However, because of moving, living out of the country, and a variety of other things, I think it was probably early to mid 3rd season when I managed to find it on TV again. 2. Did you see the subtext right away, or did it become apparent to you over time? I don't quite remember. I think it was a thought that crossed my mind. 3. Which moment or episode made you realize Xena and Gabrielle's relationship was more than a platonic friendship? OAAA. Wow! 4. Which is your favorite subtext moment? Oh, there are so many to choose from! I don't think I have a favorite. Well, let's see, OAAA is a standout for me. Then again, so is most of Season 6 5. Where are you from? The Pacific NW 6. What would you like us to call you? Kyre is just fine. |

Hello Everybody!! Hey Nutty! -Waves-
1. When did you start watching Xena? Just last summer of '06. 2. Did you see the subtext right away, or did it become apparent to you over time? I didn't know what subtext was but when I found out what it was, it made me WANT to watch the show..so therefore, I suppose I saw the subtext right away after I found out what it was. (Hopefully that makes sence, heh) 3. Which moment or episode made you realize Xena and Gabrielle's relationship was more than a platonic friendship? Every episode. lol But the Sixth season made me self-satisified that they were. 4. Which is your favorite subtext moment? Well..I have many. But Since I have to choose one, I guess.."One against an Army" where Xena would rather save Gabrielle then to save thousands of others. HEhe! QUOTE TIME!! Gabrielle: "The first thing is the greater good.' You taught me that. You taught me that there are things is life worth dying for. Things that hold a higher meaning than our own existence." Xena: "Not your existence." Gabrielle: "Why? Because I'm your friend?" Xena: "Yes!" Every time Xena shouts "Yes" I get chills down my spine. lol 5. Where are you from? Iowa. 6. What would you like us to call you? Some people call me "TheNextGabrielle". Some call me "TNG". I like both. Others, especially I, get confused if you call me Gabrielle. But you know, you could call me "Noodle" for all I care. (Honestly..please don't though. Love is like sand; The harder you try to grasp it, the more likely it'll fall.
Forget Hilary, I'm voting for Xena. |

1. When did you start watching Xena?
First saw a couple of episodes when XWP first aired in the UK but was away at university with no TV so didn't see much. 2. Did you see the subtext right away, or did it become apparent to you over time? Didn't really see the subtext as such till I started watching the show properly. However, the first full ep I saw was the Xena Scrolls, and I have to say that the character of Janice Covington did make me raise my eyebrows. A lot. 3. Which moment or episode made you realize Xena and Gabrielle's relationship was more than a platonic friendship? I read about the subtext before I started watching the show in full on DVD a couple of years ago, and it was in any case VERY clear to me in SOTP. Their story was romantic from the very beginning. 4. Which is your favorite subtext moment? Too many to mention them all. I even think that S5 has loads of excellent subtext moments. I was very happy that the subtext was SO clear in S6, though I would obviously have liked an unambiguous statement made in some form before the series ended. 5. Where are you from? Midlands, UK 6. What would you like us to call you? Lefty |

Hey, I'm a newbie, so I'll take a shot at this:
1. When did you start watching Xena? Actually, just about three weeks ago... I watched the show very seldomly when it was first aired on German TV, but back then I was way more into Hercules. I didn't really think about either of the two shows for years until recently and I ordered the first Herc season on DVD. I enjoyed the three Xena episodes quite a lot and therefore got myself Xena's Season 1 DVD box. What can I say? I got hooked immediately and never looked back. 2. Did you see the subtext right away, or did it become apparent to you over time? Frankly, it took me quite some time to see what's going on. I feel tempted to watch the first season again and see what's there from a different angle. 3. Which moment or episode made you realize Xena and Gabrielle's relationship was more than a platonic friendship? Quite late, I guess, but it's in 'Is There a Doctor in the House?', when Gabrielle dies. I like to think that this is also the moment for Xena to realise how much this crazy Blonde means to her and that she needs her more than she may have thought. 4. Which is your favorite subtext moment? I've only just finished Season 2, but for now I can tell that I liked the one scene in 'Return of Callisto' when Xena prays for Gabrielle. I'm not really into praying and stuff, but neither is Xena, and still she does it for Gabrielle, hoping that it may save her. Perhaps not the most "subtexty" moment, but it really got me. 5. Where are you from? A town near Zurich, Switzerland. 6. What would you like us to call you? The name's Juerg.

1. When did you start watching Xena?
1998 or 1999. One Against an Army was my first episode. Guess that's why I'm a subber 2. Did you see the subtext right away, or did it become apparent to you over time? When I first saw the show I was alittle too young to relize the subtext. As I got older I started noticing it and it became very apparent. 3. Which moment or episode made you realize Xena and Gabrielle's relationship was more than a platonic friendship? Probably the Quest. It was hard to deny it after that episode. 4. Which is your favorite subtext moment? I don't think I could choose. I love 'em all 5. Where are you from? VA, USA 6. What would you like us to call you? Shannon or amazonprincess. Which ever. Closing thoughts.... I'm very glad to be here amonst people who understand my obbession ![]() ![]() |

Quote: Hey Nutty, I'll sure like to write about some of my observations here from time to time. I've done some reading on this board during the past few days and this seems to be such a nice community. And since I am way "behind" with watching the show (just started season 3 yesterday night), I'll try not to get on everyone's nerves like "Guys! Did you realise, in episode xy blabla..." and you all will be like "No sh*t, dude, we figured that out like six years ago..." |
