The main character is a American Indian soldier, it has a desert setting to it. It went onto have a sequel to it.

I contacted the author many years ago asking about possibilities of seeing this book as a movie, she said that a company weas negotiating about making it into a movie. It doesn't seem like anything had happened in a while so I sent her another mail. She assured me that they were still interested but that these things take time.
